TEAM BUILDER Hire Like a Pro
> Family Flowers, a florist on its fourth generation of McCarthy family leader- ship, currently operates 40 locations in 10 states — and keeps growing. “Right now, we have 886 employ-
ees,” says Senior Human Resources Manager Denise LaFrenier. And that amount doubles for Valentine’s Day and again for Mother’s Day. With such a large operation,
LaFrenier is no stranger to the hiring process. She is a pro at filling a position (or several), and her first piece of advice is to always be looking for candidates. Don’t wait for a crisis. “One tactic that works for us is to
post an ‘Are you interested in working for us?’ call to action on all our individual company websites,” says LaFrenier. “If someone comes across my desk with
good experience, I’m going to talk to him or her whether a position is open or not. I’m not letting good potential get away.” For job postings, the HR expert relies
on more traditional platforms like Indeed and ZipRecruiter. She adds that social media is a great tool but is only as good as an account’s reach. When posting, include a job description and company background, and be sure to promote any perks (benefits, employee discounts) that set you apart from competitors. LaFrenier admits Indeed is not
perfect, but she is a fan of its messaging functionality. “Instead of taking the time to call or email applicants, I message them,” she says. “Seeing whether they’re monitoring their account and willing to respond is a good litmus test for their interest.”
When it comes to bringing on extra
staff for holidays, the HR executive sets up open hiring days, when managers interview anyone who walks in during a certain time window. If the hiring process seems daunt-
ing, LaFrenier recommends delegation: have a trusted manager weed through applications and pull the good ones for review. Also, be sure to set aside time for hiring tasks. “At the end of the day, hiring enough staff is how you take care of cus- tomers,” she says. “It’s something that’s worth the time.”
