Five keys to master plan success
4. Plan and design for the future As you develop the plan, keep five guiding principles in mind:
• Accessibility: ramps, signage, accessible facilities.
• Sustainability: energy efficiency, water conservation, sustainable materials.
• Flexibility: multi-use spaces, financial planning, market analysis.
• Inclusivity: universal design, program adaptations, staff training.
• Growth: scalability, attention to site “pinch points,” community engagement.
5. Communicate and market your plan When the plan is complete, don’t tuck it in a drawer. Share the story of what’s ahead, visually and verbally. Show how the improvements will impact your camp and target your communica- tion to the people most likely to champion and support the vision. Building excitement and ownership is just as critical as the plan itself.
Master planning is a journey, not just a document. Done well, it gives you clarity, direction and confidence for the future. Happy planning!
