Welcome letter
W
elcome to a special issue of IR Quarterly celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Society of Interventional Radiology. What began as an idea among a small group of colleagues has bloomed into a professional home, support system and unifi ed
voice for all of interventional radiology.
Fifty years isn’t a long time in healthcare, but during these years, IR has not only grown but also fl ourished into a competitive and distinct primary specialty that exists on the cutting edge of medical innovation and patient care—and SIR has been there through it all. This anniversary is not just a celebration of IR’s history and achievements, but of the community that IRs have built for themselves along the way.
Within this issue, you will fi nd a comprehensive timeline tracing the evolution of SIR, highlighting the key moments that have defi ned its journey, from creating the identity of IR to establishing an IR residency. Through interviews with the leaders and luminaries of the fi eld, this issue looks back at the innovations, advocacy achievements and practice paradigm shift that serve as the foundation for modern IR.
However, this issue isn’t just about the past; it’s about the future. As we celebrate 50 years of SIR, we are also looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities on the horizon. How will the next generation of IRs change the face of the specialty? What practice models will shape the future of care? How can IR be a leader in medicine and expand patient care in underserved areas?
Since its inception, SIR has existed to support and uplift its members. To showcase this, each section of this issue includes a resource page highlighting a handful of society resources, initiatives and benefi ts that SIR provides to members. From ever- evolving educational off erings, professional development opportunities, lobbying successes or practice toolkits, these resources help IRs deliver quality, evidence-based care while thriving in their chosen practice model.
As we look back with gratitude and forward with anticipation, SIR invites all members to join in the celebrations with us at SIR 2025 in Nashville. This issue serves as a preview of what to expect from this historic Annual Scientifi c Meeting. We hope you will join us to commemorate how the history of SIR, the collective expertise of IRs, and a shared dedication to patient care will continue to drive our society forward for the next 50 years and beyond.
This anniversary is not just a celebration of IR’s history and achievements, but of the community that IRs have built for themselves along the way.
