Education is at the heart of SIR’s mission. Learn more about how SIR’s educational platform has evolved over the years to meet the need of an increasingly specialized fi eld.
SIR development courses: SIR has begun adding additional learning opportunities to the Annual Scientifi c Meeting with the inclusion of deep-dive programming focused on specialized topics.
SIR Business Institute: In 2022, the SIR Business Institute was launched, with the mission of educating private practice IRs on business and practice management issues. This 1-day masterclass is attached to the Annual Scientifi c Meeting and off ers deep-dive training on all aspects of the practice of IR. Since its launch, the SIR Business Institute has educated almost 700 attendees in person and online.
SIR Stroke Course: The SIR Stroke Course is a full-day development course added on to the Annual Scientifi c Meeting, where IRs passionate about stroke care are able to receive in-depth, specialized education taught by the experts.
The Learning Center: SIR’s education library houses countless learning and CME opportunities. Members can browse by subject, fi nd self-paced courses, access on-demand education and curate their learning experience based on their needs.
Evolving meetings: Throughout the years, SIR has launched and sunset a number of meeting formats, each catering to the needs and interests of the specialty at that time. Below, check out some of SIR’s meetings throughout the years.
• M&M conferences: From 1997 to 1999, SCVIR hosted morbidity and mortality conferences, where IRs could discuss cases with unexpected outcomes.
• Spring Practicum: Since 2006, this course provides additional learning for IRs nearing the end of their training. In it’s 19th iteration, the IR Residency Practicum will take place in Chicago, June 5–7.
•CLOTS: Catheter Lysis of Thromboembolic Stroke Meeting (CLOTS) started as a didactic training in 2000 and evolved into a recurring meeting by 2009. Today, the SIR Stroke Course provides the same in-depth, dedicated programming.
• LEARN/ACTiVE: SCVIR and SIR had multiple meetings dedicated to lower extremity venous management since 2004. Over the years, these meetings coalesced into Lower Extremity Revascularization (LEARN) and Advanced Therapies in Venous Interventions (ACTiVE).
• Y-90: Debuting in 2011 as “Y90: Are yoU Ready?”, the Y-90 programming became a staple of SIR education.

SIR EDGE: In 2024, SIR launched a new in-person meeting. SIR EDGE off ers deep-dive education and resources focused on MSK/pain management, Y-90,
portal hypertension and PAD. SIR EDGE 2024 debuted with 237 attendees. SIR EDGE 2025 is scheduled for October 9–11 in San Diego.
SIR Virtual Angio Club:
Back in 1997, SCVIR hosted the “SCVIR Case Club,” an online angio club that featured diff erent cases each month.
Today, it’s known to members as the SIR Virtual Angio Club. Created during the pandemic, the SIR Virtual Angio Club brings the IR community together for case presentations, discussions and learning sessions.

Supporting diverse medical students: The SIR Foundation GEMS (Grants for Education of Medical Students) program
was founded in 2019 to provide medical students from diverse backgrounds with educational programming, support for visiting clerkship rotations, networking opportunities and attendance at the SIR Annual Scientifi c Meeting. The program cycles have match rates between 88% and 100%, refl ecting the strong preparation and competitive edge it provides its participants.
