Come join the celebrations
For half a century, SIR has been at the forefront of innovation and patient-centered care. SIR will be celebrating 50 years of minimally invasive medicine at SIR 2025, but we’re kicking off the celebrations early. We’re looking back at our success over on
sirweb.org, before we celebrate our future in Nashville!
IR representation at the Latino Medical Student Association conference. Updates from SIR communities
Recruiting the best and the brightest In September, SIR staff and faculty represented SIR at the annual Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) conference on the USC campus in LA. The conference had a record attendance of over 1,500, with SIR events at almost full capacity. “This event was a success due to the support of SIR's Diversity Equity and Inclusion Advancement Coalition and volunteer members representing multiple sections, including URM, RFS, WIR and APDIR.”
Highlights
• 62 students at the lunch session where faculty promoted diversity while sharing the background of IR, their experiences in the field and pathways to becoming an IR.
• 54 students at two workshops with three stations where faculty showcased IR techniques. Supplies were provided by Cook Medical and Penumbra.
• Our booth at the expo introduced countless Latino attendees to SIR. We distributed a lot of SIR swag, IR brochures and pathway postcards.
What a great event! Many thanks to SIR members Will Alago, Jr., MD, FSIR; Dalila Nieves, MD; Antoinette S. Gomes, MD, FSIR; Geogy Vatakencherry, MD, FSIR; Emilio Escobar, MD; and trainee Edgar Tello Ruiz for their time and effort. Congratulations to SIR member and medical student, Estefania Gonzales, who was awarded the SIR travel stipend for her abstract submission.
