IR UpFront First GCAW recipients named

The SIR Foundation Giving Circle for the Advancement of Women (GCAW) has awarded its first two awards to Rebecca Chason, MD, and Setayesh Sotoudehnia Korani, MD.

This award comprises a $1,000-$2,500 stipend to cover the cost of attending SIR 2025. Awardees are chosen via a blind vote conducted by Founding Circle members.

SIR tells Congress to pass Medicare cost-of-living increases

SIR, as a member of the Medicare Reform Coalition, joined more than 120 healthcare organizations in a letter to Congress supporting H.R.2474, the Strengthening Medicare for Patients and Providers Act. H.R.2474 calls for an annual pay adjustment tied to a full Medicare Economic Index (MEI) to close the unsustainable gap between what Medicare pays physicians and the actual cost of delivering high-quality patient care.

Clinicians continue to face ongoing financial challenges. In July, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the FY 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS) proposed rule, which calls for a 2.8% reduction to the MPFS conversion factor (CF). This cut will coincide with an expected 3.6% increase in medical cost inflation.

Physicians are the only healthcare providers that do not receive an annual inflationary pay adjustment. The Medicare Physician Advisory Committee (MedPAC) endorses an annual inflationary pay adjustment tied to a half MEI.

“The opportunities afforded by the GCAW program are a way to support leadership training that can be tailored to individual interests and provides flexibility in implementation,” said M. Victoria Marx, MD, FSIR, a Founding Circle Member. “I hope young women with organizational/scientific/educational/business interests can use resources provided by GCAW to get the knowledge and experience they would find useful to pursue their professional goals.”

"I applied for the GCAW program because it aligns with my vision of supporting women in IR," said Dr. Korani. "As someone who has worked hard to balance research and career advancement, often without dedicated funding, I saw this award as an invaluable opportunity to both further my research and contribute to a larger movement aimed at elevating women in this specialty."

Dr. Chason will utilize the travel stipend to attend her first Annual Scientific Meeting.

"Although one of my abstracts was accepted at a previous meeting, I was unable to go as I gave birth to my child during that time," Dr. Chason said. "With the GCAW funding, I will be able to attend a SIR meeting before I finish my residency, which makes it feel much more personal."
