President’s Message
Hello Chapter Members! Transitions. They happen all the time in our lives: the changing seasons, each new year, and
bold, new life decisions. So, too, our
Chapter is going through its regular transition of new Board Officers, new Board members, and new Committee Chairs. This happens every year.
What doesn’t usually happen is that we will not have the venerable Michelle Leary as our Executive Director after December 2nd. Michelle has been our backbone and our leader for the past 22 years. She’s kept professionalism and integrity at the forefront of every event and publication presented by WSCAI. I know I’m not alone in saying: “You will be amazing wherever you land, Michelle. Your new organization and your new team will be lucky to have you!”
Here is where I think it’s appropriate to take a deep breath. Seriously, while you’re taking the time to read this message give it a try. It will help, I promise: in for the count of three, out for the count of three. That breath helps us to look around and appreciate what we have. It also prepares us for the work ahead, creating the framework for what we can be. At our Awards Gala and Annual Meeting held on November 4th at the Washington Athletic Club, we celebrated what makes WSCAI great—its volunteer members and leaders. Looking around that room, I saw the past, present and future of WSCAI, and it gave me strength.
So, here I am as your next Chapter President, and you might be asking who I am. You may have seen me at a tradeshow, noticed I am a Board member on our website,
wscai.org, or you might follow me on LinkedIn. Since I love talking to people about what they do, I don’t always share information about myself. So, here’s a little bit about me: Through my company, I’ve been part of WSCAI since 2005. In 2011, I had the opportunity to be a part of the original Business Partners Committee, thanks to an initiative by then-president, Duncan Kirk. We had an amazing group of volunteers that crafted the Business Partner Code of Ethics for Washington State: like Tony Rafel, Mary Reiten, Lisa Hanses, Deb Carter, John Galluzzo, Lisa Poole, Amy Clements, and Troy Brogdon… you get the idea. These are some amazingly gifted people that wanted to make WSCAI a better place to do business; to hold business partners to a higher standard of ethics, BECAUSE they worked for community associations. Eventually, I chaired that committee for several years. In 2019, I was asked by Tony Rafel, then President-Elect, to run for an open Board position. So here I am.
So, who am I? I am a serial volunteer just like many of you. 6 Community Associations Journal | November–December 2022
I’m a worker bee that loves learning from others and contributing where I can: from PTA, to sports mom, to helping an association that has been the life blood of my company for the past 18 years. I have held leadership positions my entire life, but I work behind the scenes: I’m a coach, a business manager, and a good listener. I want to make those around me better.
Going into 2023, we finally have time to take a breath, like the breath we just took together, and be PROACTIVE rather than REACTIVE. Stop and think about that.
We’ve been on a constant diet of adapting to circumstances and as a consequence all we could do was keep our heads down and put one foot in front of the other. So now, it’s okay to take a breath and look toward the future. With the Board’s approval, we have already started working with a strategic planning facilitator that will help us listen to each other and challenge each other to envision what we can be over the next 3-5 years and beyond: helping the association management industry find ways to bring in new managers while retaining those with experience. Becoming more visible to condo and HOA homeowners looking for resources and education to help them and their communities. Creating more opportunities for inclusion and diversity, so we can listen to voices that may not represent the majority.
Similar to that original Business Partners Committee, I’m so excited to be a member of this new group of Chapter leadership. Your new WSCAI Board is a rockstar team made up of HOA owners, association managers, and business partners. In particular, I’d like to welcome our newest members: Kristen McCormick, Agynbyte LLC; Greg Floyd, HUB International; and Jill Jones, Columbia Bank. Many on the Board qualify in more than one of our membership categories! You can learn more about the entire Board online at:
https://wscai.org/board-of-directors.
Having known and worked with these people for many years, I have learned there are a few common traits they have, like their commitment to WSCAI, their follow through, and their ability to raise the already high bar of professionalism that Michelle set for our Chapter. I’m looking forward to learning from them, encouraging them, and working with them as a team to envision what WSCAI can be. We welcome any input you may have throughout the coming year.
Thank you for taking a breath with me as we jump into this transition together…or maybe TRANSFORMATION is a better word, because we are ready to meet change head on and do the work necessary to improve how we support and educate our current membership as well as those that don’t know we exist…yet!
Sincerely, Andrea Goodmansen, Chapter President (206) 545-7837 |
