o create a high-functioning board of directors, you have to look beyond the individual personalities that ultimately


assemble around the conference table. Intention, background, community focus all matter, but these qualities can be enhanced by creating opportunities to increase your board’s success.


Whether you are a board member, or an onsite or portfolio manager who interacts with one or more boards, there are many ways to support a board you have influence on to ensure optimal success. Here are just a few ideas for consideration.


Increase the board members’ connections to each other.


Most board members volunteer because they are connected to their community. Take your board to the next level by connecting these community minded individuals

to each other in order to build a high-functioning team. Consider board development opportunities, like shared experiences, group outings and certainly professionally led workshops, to strengthen team connections.

Take time to understand the skills and strengths, as well as the needs, of your board members.


What are the strengths and skills each board member might offer the group? The community? Equally important, what does each board director hope to gain from this volunteer experience? Of course ensuring the community benefits from all that each board member has to offer is key, but additionally, understanding what these volunteers hope to get out of the experience, and making sure you help them achieve as much, is an important step to a high- functioning outcome.
