President’s Message Troy Brogdon, Chapter President

Happy June! I’m going to throw a few numbers out there: 2, 1721, 1615, 2963. You might be asking what these numbers are, but if you are Tracy Abdul, WSCAI’s Director of Membership, or the Membership Committee, you are already well aware of these numbers. Our chapter is #2. We are the second largest Chapter in CAI. CAI is an international organization and we are the second

largest chapter! (At the National CAI Conference, there were folks from Australia and Dubai!) 1721 – This is the number of members that we currently have. 1615 – This is the number of members in the New Jersey chapter (3rd largest chapter) and 2963 is the membership level for the largest chapter in Washington DC. The reason I bring this up is that WSCAI is a sum of all its parts. We, the members, are the parts and the more members we have the more parts we have, the more ideas we generate, the more Chapter volunteers we can draw from. All of which makes the Chapter stronger. Let’s keep pushing to continue the growth and give kudos to Tracy and the Membership Committee as well as all of the recruiters who continue to help build our Chapter! Keep in mind there is a $1200 grand prize for the Recruiter of the Year!

Last month we had the Chapter Luncheon on May 16th and talked about a great topic: Reserve Studies. Reserve Study professionals help associations establish a solid reserve plan for when to perform and how to fund capital improvements for community associations. Reserve Studies help to avoid the possibility of special assessments or a major unexpected reserve expense. In addition to a great topic, we had strong attendance with an opportunity to network with industry professionals, community association volunteer leaders (homeowners and board members), as well as vendor partners which are familiar with the unique circumstances working in community associations. The point is that the Chapter Luncheons are a great way to chat with peers and professionals in the community association world and combine that with a great lunch and education. If you haven’t been to one, you’re missing out!

Another great opportunity for networking and meeting folks with common interests, problems, and solutions is the Chapter Mixers. The next one is going to be in Tukwila at Odin Brewing on Thursday, June 1st.

The rest of the month is a little lighter than the past two, but we do have one of the biggest events of the year on Thursday, June 8th. Made for Managers Day is a one-day tradeshow and educational event with high level education tailored more toward the community association managers. Continuing Education credits are available to attendees.

The articles in this month’s Journal are all great and I’d like to draw particular attention to the cover article about the transitioning between management firms. This can be a difficult process. It can be a frustrating process or it could all go smoothly without the headaches. If you check out Cathy Lemon’s article Management Company Transitions Made Easy-er, you can pick up some tips that will help. She explains from a management perspective her processes for not only taking on a new community, but also how to facilitate the transfer of a community to a new community management firm. These changes happen regularly so it’s a good thing to learn about since you or your association may be faced with it at some point.

Let’s end with a few fun numbers since we started with numbers: 77, 40, 73, 88. Well since people always assume that I’m younger than I am, I figured I’d share 77 since that is when I was born. 40 years old this year! 73 a comfortable temperature in Fahrenheit for a day on the links and 88 would be a good Golf score for me. WSCAI’s Annual Golf tournament is next month. See you all there!
