kay, so as a board member you’ve been a little sloppy and inconsistent when it comes to inspecting and enforcing community


living rules. You know you need to clean things up and get people back on track but you find yourself resisting because it puts you in an awkward position with neighbors. You just don’t like having to be the rules police. But non-enforcement or inconsistent enforcement affects other homeowners, and things may spiral out of control until rules seem meaningless.


Rule-relaxation can make it difficult to restore order.


A period of rule-relaxation can make it difficult to restore order. People have


learned that there are no consequences for adverse behavior, and the association board loses the impetus to teach, encourage, and compel everyone to follow the rules of the community.


Responsibility to Enforce


Your association functions as a government, albeit a small, private one. One of the key jobs for


boards is to enforce the rules (though this responsibility is not boundless). The governing documents define the rules. Those rules must be followed and enforced consistently. Be proud of the principles that guide your association and you will garner universal cooperation instilling a culture of higher standards. These are the minimum standards of an orderly, beautiful, and pleasant neighborhood.


Association-Wide Compliance


It starts at the top. It starts with the president or other leader who is committed to building the culture of following the rules of the community. That person has to genuinely impart and sell to every board member the community
