PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Chad Hurst, DC
President, WSCA Board of Directors
The end of the year is quickly approaching and that means another legislative session is about to begin. We have high hopes that the chiropractic profession will get some significant support and movement with our bills of interest,
specifically HB 1655, the bill we introduced last year to require cost-of-living increases in provider fee schedules. The more bipartisan statewide support we can receive from legislators, the greater the chance we will have for our bill to move forward. To make this happen there are a couple action steps you can take.
1. Contact your local representatives and senators and talk with them about the issues facing our profession, and healthcare in general. From my experience I have found this to be encouraging and a very insightful look into the political process. Meeting with legislators has also given me an appreciation for the wide range of topics they must gather information on and formulate an opinion, all of which affects us who live in their districts. When a bill comes before them and they are familiar with it because of time they have spent with you, their constituent, they are able to make an informed decision as they cast their vote. I encourage you to grab another chiropractor from your area, make an appointment with your legislators and discuss the
real-life issues you are facing as a health professional and a small business owner. Making this happen when legislators are in district before the session begins in January, or in Olympia after January 8, 2024, is very important for our success.
2. Donate to the Washington State Chiropractic Trust NOW! This is the political action for Washington chiropractors. By rules of the IRS, the Trust is a separate entity from the WSCA. The Trust donates to political campaigns and ballot measures that will move our political agenda ahead. The money comes strictly through individual chiropractic donations from around the state. The more funds that come into the Trust, the more support we can give to legislators who support us. There is always a monetary shortfall compared to the needs of our political agenda. I would love for us, as a collective profession, to solve this problem. It could be done very easily and all it would take is 100 percent participation from our association, if not the entire profession. By my math, if every member of the association gave $10 per month we would raise over $100,000 annually for the Trust. We have a great lobbyist in Lori Grassi and a dedicated Legislative director in Dr. Dave Butters, and what they need is us behind them giving them the tools that they need to really support and influence candidates that will move our bills forward. Please consider supporting the Trust. If we are all in, we all win!
