EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Jeff Curwen, CAE WSCA Executive Director

The New Year brings with it many exciting opportunities for the association and I can’t wait to roll out all the things we have in store for 2023. Just to name a few, the WSCA is in the process of rebranding our annual conference. Although ChiroConfab was a well-intentioned name, it drew some deserved criticism for not adequately describing the event and, frankly, just being a little awkward. We want our signature event to be recognizable (for the right reasons) and indicative of its true purpose—to be a place where Washington chiropractors can connect, experience professional fellowship, learn, and more. We’re in the final stages of this rebrand and are looking forward to announcing it soon.

Other new developments for the association include weekly legislative update webinars (which are currently underway, Fridays at 1:00pm), upcoming monthly product showcase webinars, relocation of the association offices, an increased focus on in-person events, the resumption of New Doctor Dinners, partnerships with Washington Chiropractic College, new clinical support services, and more.

But I’m also cognizant of the fact that the new year brought bad news for most of our members. A slap in the face, really. You undoubtedly received a notice in January about new, lower fee schedules. The WSCA is working on this issue, but it’s important for you to be involved in the process as well. Our staff can lobby lawmakers, but you’re the business owners affected by these changes. You’re the ones who can’t hire new staff, keep the staff members you currently have, or buy and upgrade the equipment you need to provide the best care possible. We can relay that to legislators,

but it’s much more impactful when it comes from the practitioners. It’s not simply a business issue, either. The staffing and equipment matters affect how many patients you can see in a given day, thereby affecting patient access to care. These are facts that lawmakers need to hear, but which they need to hear from you.

If you haven’t already done so, please make an appointment with your legislators. Meetings may be done in person or via Zoom, and they may be with the lawmakers themselves or with their aides. Either way, it’s the DCs that they need to hear from. When you do make an appointment, contact our Executive of Legislation and Policy, Lori Grassi, at wsca@ chirohealth.org. Put “Legislative Appointment” in the subject line and let her know the date, time, and location of your meeting and who you’re scheduled to meet with. If she can attend with you, she will. If not, she’ll provide you with the talking points you need to cover.

The only way to address this issue is by being involved. Fewer than half of all chiropractors in Washington are members of the WSCA, and if you’re receiving this issue of Plexus, you’re one of them. We need you to get involved, but beyond that, we need you to get your colleagues involved. There’s no reason why a solid majority of chiropractors in this state can’t be active members and if they were, we’d be able to accomplish so much more for the profession. If you know a DC who isn’t a member, have them visit www.chirohealth. org/join and submit a membership application today. Only when we work together can we be helping chiropractors help patients.
