As I write this I am about to start my term as President of the WSCA. I am humbled to be in this position and I am committed to help make the WSCA stronger and more connected over the next year. We have been led by some terrific individuals the past few years, and I endeavor to live up to the mark they have left. I am very thankful for the terrific WSCA staff that faithfully tends to the association’s needs day in and day out. The entire team and the board really strive to keep our association strong and healthy, as well as help the chiropractors of Washington help their patients.
The heritage of chiropractic in our state is strong. We have a great state association and many laws in place that dozens of states across our nation are envious of. The position we are now in is the result of the countless hours and efforts that the chiropractors who came before us gave. Just as in the case of a person’s health, we know it is the decisions and hard work that a person did in the past that gives them the health outcome they want in the future. Our profession and our state association are no different. Our association will be stronger or weaker depending on the actions that we take today. It will be stronger or weaker depending on what you do today, this week and this year. Will we work as one to make it better or will we let our differences and other interests keep us apart and keep us from moving our profession toward one of health and one that is flourishing?
I would like to challenge all of us to look for ways to be more involved, as well as ways in which we can build a stronger culture of cooperation and collaboration in our profession. As much as I dislike social media, I have been incredibly encouraged to see chiropractors help chiropractors with difficult cases and even business related problems. I have been thrilled to watch our Executive Director Jeff Curwen and our Executive of Legislation and Policy, Lori Grassi, take on tough issues and really battle to give our association accurate and wise counsel over the last two years. We are stronger when we work together.
We currently have 47% of the licensed DCs in our state as members of the WSCA. This number is actually up from the past couple years, but it could and should be much better. It is time that new and even seasoned chiropractors step up and get involved to protect our future, the future of the next generation of chiropractors, and the rights of the patients we serve. For years I sat on the sideline, letting other chiropractors in our profession carry the weight that I should have been carrying. It was not until I attended my first legislative day that I realized the importance of getting involved and getting “on the field”. The WSCA needs member engagement and we are hoping to aid in this by increasing ways in which you can interact and connect in 2023. In the immediate future, we are excited to get more people involved in legislative activities, and a great way to do this is to contact local legislators or attend a legislative day with a peer or group of chiropractors and explain to them the issues we face on a day-to-day basis. This will give you a sense of involvement, connectedness, and empowerment. Try it, I promise it will help you take a step onto the field.
