KENCY DUARTE, CPA, is an advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion in the CPA profession. Trough his involvement with the OSCPA’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, the Oklahoma City Hispanic Chamber and the Association of Latino Professionals For America, Duarte is becoming a leader for DEI progress in Oklahoma. His path to become an OSCPA Trailblazer began approximately 2,000 miles away in Puerto Rico. Growing up, Duarte excelled at baseball, and his talent provided him with the opportunity to play at a D-1 university in Alabama.

While attending Alabama A&M University, Duarte set his sights

on a career in accounting. However, earning his CPA license required sacrifice. “When I started studying for the CPA exam, I skipped my parent’s

birthday, activities with friends and decided to leave behind the sport that I had played for more than 18 years,” he said. “Tat was a big decision for me, knowing that the CPA license had the potential to open many doors going forward.” Fortunately, those sacrifices have allowed Duarte to now provide an

invaluable service for his clients. “I see accounting as a different language that we translate for those not in the profession,” he said. “Getting to meet clients and understand their mission and passion, so I can serve them is what I enjoy the most about the work.” Duarte is not only a licensed CPA in Oklahoma, but also in Puerto

Rico. He is also an active member of the Puerto Rico Society of CPAs. “Early in my career, I thought being Latino could hold me back in

my career and development, however, I quickly learned that it gives me a different perspective, views and ideas to bring to the table,” he said. “Since realizing that, I have seen my career grow exponentially.” Duarte now works at Arledge & Associates, P.C., in Oklahoma City as an assurance senior manager. He prides himself on maintaining meaningful relationships with his clients and consistently meeting their deadlines.

“I am surrounded by amazing leaders in the community and the

profession that have helped me learn and continuously grow as a CPA,” Duarte said. “Tey lead by example and have built a path that allows me to succeed and positively impact my community and profession.” When not working, Duarte invests his time into his unique family. In addition to their two dogs, Ginger and Kona, Duarte and his wife also have two miniature horses and are raising a Potbellied Pig named Luly. Although Duarte and his “miniature farm” are thriving in Oklahoma, he keeps Puerto Rico close to his heart and his work.
