Joining Dr. Bowen at the MDA House of Delegates on Saturday for his presidential installation were, from left: Bre Koehler, dental team member; Dr. Kirk Opdahl, practice partner; Cindy Callahan, mother; and, Jessica Groves, dental team member. Due to sport schedules, his wife and children were unable to attend.
tee that will begin meeting this year. The Board has appointed Dr. Emily Mattingly as chair, and that group has emerged as a diverse and interactive committee from all over the state. We are anxious to see where this can take us. I think many members are hungry to see the various areas of growth and development we can accomplish.
How did you first become active in (invited to) organized dentistry? What are the reasons you have stayed involved? I joined the ADA upon graduation from dental school. I was introduced to the Greater Kansas City Dental Society. While attending CE meetings there, I was yearning for mentorship and cama- raderie. Through those meetings I found community and becoming a member of the MDA family has made all the difference. The connections I found with fellow dentists empowered and inspired me. I was asked to be on the New Dentist Committee. That allowed me to make connections across the state. The rest is history.
If a non-member asked you why they should pay dues to belong, what would you tell them? Advocacy, Camaraderie, Connections, CE, Professional Growth, to name just a few.
Of all your current activities—dental, civic, personal—is there something you are particu- larly excited to be part of? My love of sports is always exciting to me. I have been officiating high school football for more than 25 years. I think being on a football field on Friday night, under the lights, is something every- one should have the chance to do.
If you abandoned dentistry to pursue a differ- ent ‘dream’ or Plan B, what would that be? My family has a farm in the Ozarks of Southern Missouri. I would be a full-time farmer. My grandpa had a dairy farm I would start back up and enjoy life in the country.
