That’s the Ticket! L


ately I can’t stop thinking about tickets. There’s the presidential ticket, which barring a court injunc- tion, will be resolved by the time


you read this. That election result may have you groaning and dreaming of a one-way ticket out of town. There are also the I Heart Raffle tickets which I have been pushing for the last month or more as part of our annual fundraiser for the MDA’s two foundations. The holders of the winning tickets will be reveling in the positive payoff from their inexpensive investment. Plus they will have satisfaction knowing they help to advance great causes. The price of sporting tickets recently have varied considerably from nearly free to attend an MU Tigers football game to nearly $20,000 to attend Game 7 of the World Series. Tickets reflect the law of sup- ply and demand. Perhaps you are like me in that I used to collect ticket stubs to com- memorate my attendance at everything from my first concert (The Eagles in 1976) to the 2001 Masters. These stubs pave my very own memory lane. But not all tickets are good. There’s the bad type like the speeding ticket I hope to avoid as I race up and down the highways on official MDA business.


All these tickets are printed on simple paper, but the power is in what the ticket allows the holder to lay claim to. Remember the entrée into a whole other world of chocolate delight provided by the Golden Ticket in the story of Willy Wonka? There’s real benefit to holding the right ticket. If you need more realistic proof, ask the people with the sideline pass, the first-class ticket or the all-inclusive wrist- band what their experience was like. People love to tell you how good their tickets were at the event of the season. The right ticket can open doors and transform your experience from average to unforgettable.


Membership in the MDA is your ticket. It’s an investment that allows you to lay claim to

some pretty spectacular benefits. Member- ship opens a whole other world where your profession comes alive with opportunity, satisfaction and value through savings. Your MDA ticket allows for first-rate advocacy and vigilant watchfulness on legislative and regulatory issues that impact your liveli- hood. Or you can transform your experience by redeeming your ticket for excellent CE offerings, charitable events like MOMOM, and social and leadership gatherings. My observation from attending Board and com- ponent meetings while traveling the state is that members are paving their own profes- sional memory lane and getting the most out of their membership ticket when they use it frequently. I’m not naïve enough to think ev- erything at the MDA is a world of chocolate delight, but it works hard for you because our mission is to help all members succeed.


So as we finish off the year and get ready for another round of dues, I want to thank all of you who have served on Foundation boards or volunteered at MOMOM or donated to the cause. Thanks for redeeming your ticket! As for 2017, I hope you will consider the French phrase “c’est l’etiquette,” which means “that’s the ticket” or “the right course of ac- tion” when filling out your mandatory dues and voluntary donations. We will work hard to provide you a meaningful and valuable membership experience. f
