pring has sprung, and if that means your schedule picks up a bit—both at home and work—then your right in step with the MDA! It’s an overused cliché, but where does the time go? Last issue we were just looking forward to the New Year and now, already, we are looking into busy summer months. Let me give you an update on some of that activity.

Hopefully you received the MDA eNews Update notifying members of the Expanded Function and Sedation rule changes that went into effect February 28. Both of these rules have been a long time in the making, and throughout the process, the Dental Board received input from a variety of stakeholders who attended various meetings. These included dental assistant association and dental assistant educators (for the dental assisting rule) and dentists, anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists, pediatric dentists, DOCS examiners and oral surgeons (for the seda- tion rule). In addition, MDA was present at these meetings to listen and give input, based on Association policies. We know that some of you have expressed additional questions since receiving those updates, which were provided to the Dental Board. You can read about these changes on page 16, and as the article states, please contact the Dental Board with your questions. Be assured the MDA will continue to provide information to its members anytime updates becomes available

Also this February, the MDA sent a survey to recently licensed dentists, asking for input that would help the Association with the implementation of MDA House Resolution 2012H-11. This resolution asked the MDA to form an action plan in collaboration with local component societies and the UMKC School of Dentistry, ATSU Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health, Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medi- cine and the Center for Advanced Dental Education at St. Louis University to promote

private practice dentistry, recognizing that there are other models of delivering oral healthcare.

As such, the survey sought to examine the ways dental students learn about private practice options for delivering oral health- care while they are in dental school. The MDA received a good number of replies, not only to the six questions asked, but too, many members offered additional ideas and com- ments as well as their support for continued development of the action plan. The MDA also received information from Dean Pyle at UMKC about the extensive practice manage- ment curriculum that exists at the school and provides a great deal of information about a variety of practice options.

The MDA Governance Committee continues its work in reviewing the MDA’s governance structure. Throughout the Committee’s process, the recommendations made require approval from the MDA Board and the MDA House of Delegates. In order to allow the Governance Committee to continue its im- portant work, a special session of the MDA House of Delegates has been approved and will be hosted Friday, April 26 at the MDA Executive Office. If you have an interest in attending, please contact Margie Kunze at the MDA.

We’re pleased to announce the MDA is in the midst of planning the inaugural Connect4Success MDA Leadership Academy and New Dentist Conference. This special weekend, slated for this coming June, is designed to help new dentists and emerg- ing leaders flourish. This event is the fruit of the New Dentist Committee Workshop that was hosted by the MDA last August, but it also helps MDA reach the goal of yet another House resolution (2011H-8), which asked MDA to develop an annual training session that would educate component leadership on the structure, function and agenda of

the MDA. We were pleased to be notified recently that we received a $5,000 grant from the ADA Membership Growth program to support this and also thank MDIS, which is supporting the program with a $5,000 sponsorship.

As always, it’s been a busy time of travel, from various component meetings to func- tions of the MDA, including Legislative Day, February 27. The event fell just two days after Mother Nature dumped another round of snow across the state, but we were grateful for those who could come out. You can read a full report of current legislative activity on page 12 of this issue. In addition to state efforts, this May, members who are Missouri Action Team Leaders will attend the annual ADA Washington Leadership Conference.

As I close, I want to sincerely invite everyone to Cape Girardeau for the 2013 MOMOM clinic. A local committee of our dentist col- leagues and many other lay volunteers have been diligently planning this two-day, free dental clinic for more than 18 months. Please join me in supporting them to provide care to patients in need. That support must come in the form of having dentists signing up as volunteers to provide treatment, because the number we can provide care to directly correlates to the number of volunteers. The space is reserved, the chairs will be there. We just need you to make it a success! You can register online at www.momom.org. When you register, please invite a colleague from your area of the state (or family, friends and others from your team) to attend with you. This way you can share the drive, maybe share the cost of a hotel room, but most important, share the experience. f
