Survey reveals gap exists in Americans’ knowledge of certain basic dental terms
A
new Adult’s Oral Health & Well Being Survey indicates a significant portion of the American population is not familiar with certain key dental terms. This unfamiliarity may lead to unease in the dental chair during discussions with your oral health care profes- sional. The national survey, conducted by Delta Dental Plans Association, finds that the majority of adults are not versed in bruxism (81 percent), caries (75 percent) and prophy- laxis (64 percent). Nearly all survey respon- dents (92 percent) say they are familiar with plaque. Two in FIVE adults (40 PERCENT) are not sure what the term sealant means. Find out more about American adults’ self-gauged familiarity with certain dental terms at prn. to/2LfQf4. Delta Dental Plans Association, is the not-for-profit national association of the 39 independent Delta Dental companies.
ADA Foundation to Renew Focus on Science and Research O
14 focus | JUL/AUG 2019 | ISSUE 4
n June 28, the ADA announced it will narrow the focus of the ADA Foundation to research and science. The ADA Science Institute and the Volpe Research Center will join forces to allow for a renewed focus on the creation and translation of scientific knowledge, as well as the development of new products and technology. In order to preserve and promote our highly valuable philanthropic activities such as Give Kids A Smile, Dentist Charitable Assistance and Access to Care, these philanthropic activities will continue on, but under the umbrella of the ADA and with the support of ADA members and the larger dental community who help to move these programs forward. The ADA is appreciative of all those who volunteered for the ADA Foundation; all ADA and ADA Foundation employees who helped the Foundation work toward its mission; and all donors who made contributions to the Foundation over the years.
