The Community Associations Fact Book 2019 published by the Foundation for Community Association Research reported that “approximately 3,800,000 Illinoisans live in 1,479,000 homes in community associations.” In that same year, Illinois’ total population was 12.67 million, meaning that thirty percent of Illinoisans lived in a condominium or common interest community association.
These associations are like small, self-contained villages. Or, in some instances, not so small. In February 2021, approximately fifteen percent of Illinois’ 1400 local governments had a population of 250 or less and slightly more than one- third of the State’s local governments had a population of 750 or less.
