on each of your employees. If they are working extra hours, let them know you are aware of it. Staying close to your team is important. You should know what is important to them. Show them you care about them and come evaluation time you will have a better understanding of how to help them. Love the game you are in and the people that help you play it better.


4.) Coach your team.


Know that things happen that can derail your progress quickly. If you can get ahead of this by knowing your team and its players, it will be a lot easier to understand and adjust. Try to be the loving coach who comes alongside his teammates and tries to understand where things are going wrong. At first just get the information you need. Perhaps they are missing a player, or someone has not been up to par. Show the team you care and give them the help they need. Jump in, by completing the tasks needed. At the very least, fully understand the problem before you begin to make corrections. Once things have settled down, talk to your staff and try to completely understand what went wrong and how to fix it. Let the team know you are ready to make a decisive decision. If it involves moving people around it should be done quietly with discretion. Everything is for the team.


5.) Identify patterns of success and repeat as quickly as possible.


The data is a big contributor to your success. You don’t have to track everything but closely monitor the strengths in your team and members. To Andy, the game never stops, and you must keep moving. He calls them patterns of success. Everyone has them, you just have to recognize them and keep using them to the best of your ability. Andy’s achievement with teams is a simple but accurate way of moving people into the road of success.


Andy is a high-ranking officer with a large property management group. He has an asteroid cabinet in his office, but he says he seldom uses it. Many of the children of employees have stopped in to play. The thought of breaking up these primitive asteroids headed for this triangular shaped ship has entered his mind in many training and board meetings over the years. He often says there are three things to remember while playing the game: focus on the biggest threat, stay positive, and identify the patterns of success. With this strategy in place, you will do just fine with the metaphorical asteroids in your life.
