Following completion of the election, it is important to follow the announcements of the results showing some respect and appreciation towards the unsuccessful candidate(s). Past board members should be thanked for their service; unsuccessful challengers should be thanked for putting themselves forward as a candidate. It is important to remember all candidates had agreed to give their time, with no compensation and generally, no thanks, for the good of the community. That should be commended.

Annual elections should not embrace the bad side of politics. Newly elected boards should not spend time or focus on criticizing actions of past boards or particular board members. Rather, newly elected boards should immediately move forward with implementing its plan for improving the community. Focusing on the past only creates animosity within the community. It is always amazing to see how a board can bring a community together after a contested, often acrimonious, election. Bringing the community together, and not further dividing it, should be part of the mission of the board. It is easier for this to be done when the election process is clear, objective, and strictly followed. It is also easier to be done when all candidates focus on how good he or she is, or will be, as a board member for the community and not on other candidates or board members. Finally, it is easier for a community to come together when the focus of the newly elected board is moving forward, not looking back.
