’RANCHER RAMBLINGS

Let’s enjoy this autumn weather and not worry about winter yet

Crunch, crunch, crunch.

The goats are definitely enjoying their breakfast of acorns. For them it’s like manna from Heaven. They come out early each morning and there’s new food lying everywhere that fell over night. We’re lucky to have a good many oak trees, which provide a bounty of nu- trition each fall for the goats. There’s even plenty for the squirrels and a herd of deer that regularly pass through. There’s still tons of grass in the pas-

tures so there’s plenty to eat, but the acorns — along with muscadines and persimmons — are a special treat this time of year.

The goats head out early to find a healthy breakfast of acorns.

And speaking of this time of year, it’s hard to believe fall is al- ready here. Lane, my 10-year-old, is back in school — most of the time. Because of Covid 19, his school is having “hybrid” classes — a mixture of in-class learning and video classes.

He has adjusted to these crazy schedules better than his momma! Of course the good news about au- tumn is a break from our Mississippi heat. We try to get out and really enjoy our fall weather because it doesn’t last long before it get’s cold and dreary. We have a joke down here that spring and fall last only about two weeks each — before summer and winter come barreling in.

Before you know it it’ll be time to store more firewood in the garage, thaw out the Thanksgiving turkey, start the Christmas shopping .... Wait!

Let me back up and just enjoy this

late September morning sipping my coffee and listening to the goats and squirrels crunching on acorns. There will be time later to think about all those things that need to be done before cold weather and the holidays arrive — but not this morning. Enjoy your day! n
