Construction Technology: Are you Taking Advantage of What’s Available?

W

e live and work in a time where technology is constantly changing the way

we live our lives and run our businesses. Over the past 30 years, there have been an extraordinary amount of techno- logical advancements. Te crazy part is that even with all the changes we have seen up to this point, technology continues to progress and impact lives on a daily basis. Te big question remains, are you

keeping up with technology and taking advantage of what’s available to stay competitive and improve your bottom line?

Today we face a lot of pressure

when it comes to deciding which technology to use. Not only can it be difficult to find an effective approach for evaluating an unfamiliar technology and determining its usefulness to your business, but it can also be expensive and include hidden costs down the line. Te wrong technology slows you down, wastes your time and can quickly become an operational and financial burden if incorrectly implemented. For these reasons, selecting the right products for your needs is critical. Like any major business decision, it

is important to make sure you do your homework and include key people and end users in the decision process. From my experience, when it comes to new products, the devil is in the details. Te best way to flush out the true costs and benefits is to talk with other users to see how their implementation process is going and to find out if they are getting the results they anticipated. Your relationships within AGC are a great place to have these collaborative discussions. As you continue to read this issue

of California Constructor, you will see specific examples of how new technology is being implemented in the industry, including by AGC members

on some high- profile projects around the state. Te AGC

of California Annual Conference and National AGC Convention are great places to see what new technologies are up and coming. I always get more out of the exhibit presentations than I do when inter- acting with someone over the phone or online.

On another note, this November

at the ballot box please make sure to join the fight to protect our needed transportation infrastructure funding by VOTING NO on Prop 6, which would repeal SB1. Our AGC members gave a considerable amount of time and money to get SB1 passed. Now we ask that you stand with us against the repeal effort. Finally, in closing, I would like

to thank our Executive Committee, Chairs/Vice Chairs of our Standing State Committee’s and our Executive Leadership Team that attended this year’s Strategic Planning meetings in Monterey. We spent two productive days planning for the future of our association. Seeing the commitment from our members and staff is very exciting for the future of AGC of California. Pegeen and I look forward to seeing

everyone in Lake Tahoe for our Annual Conference at the Resort at Squaw Creek October 24-27, concluding with the Awards Banquet on the final day. Tis will be a great event, so get regis- tered now and make plans to attend!
