TECHNOLOGY TRENDS IN CONSTRUCTION
from IT spending to their use of BIM and VDC and their R&D budgets, among other things. Te 7th annual construction
technology survey and report is scheduled for release later this year. In its 6th Annual Construction Technology Report, released in December 2017, JBKnowledge reported there has been growth in tech adoption in the construction industry over the last few years – but there is still a ways to go for an industry that lags every other market sector. “Despite a noticeable uptick in
those allocating more than 1 percent of their annual sales volume to IT, construction continues to budget the least for information technology compared to other industries,” the JB Knowledge Report noted. Among its other key findings:
Mobile Use: 83.1 percent of all respondents found mobile capabilities to be important or very important to their office and on
their job sites in 2017, versus 59.2 percent who felt that way in 2012.
Emerging technology: While about 38 percent of respondents reported their company is not experimenting with emerging technology at all, that number actually decreased by almost 20

percent over last year.
Drones: For those exploring emerging technology, drones were the most popular, with 37.8 percent of respondents saying they

used them on their jobsites, a 10 percent increase over last year.
Tracking Technology: Jobsite employee tracking technology is gaining ground, with nearly 57 percent of respondents reporting they are “considering” using worksite tracking.
BIM: When it comes to BIM adoption, the survey found that just 27 percent of respondents reported having a dedicated BIM/ VDC department, but a “startling” 28 percent reported that their company does not bid on project involving BIM. Companies with $20 million or more in sales were much more likely to have a dedicated VD&C department.
R&D Spending: While less than half of respondents, or 45.6 percent, reported having a dedicated technology R&D budget in 2017, that still represented an increase from 2015 results when just 32.8 percent did.
