Myers Superintendent Wins Safety Award As a Superintendent at Myers & Sons Construction, Jorge

Hernandez is known for his attention to detail and dedication to ensuring his crews are operating in the most safe and efficient manner possible. His work earned him this year’s Superintendent Safety award in the AGC Construction Safety Excellence Awards competition. Hernandez oversees self-performed work and is responsible

for identifying safety engineering controls that are needed for the operations, coordinating with the Safety Manager, and developing the Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) that become the basis for the daily toolbox talks that he leads. On projects where the majority of work is performed by subcontractors,

such as civil and underground utility work, he takes the time to understand the scope, associated concerns, and discusses appropriate measures that need to be implemented. He builds rapport with the subcontractor crews that are in the field performing

the work, ensuring they are treated like employees and empowered to make safe decisions, provide feedback on operations, and improve the safety culture that is embraced by Myers. “Jorge consistently does a great job,” said Micaiah Revero, Project Director,

Myers & Sons. “Whether it is his own safety, ensuring the safety of the people that work under him, or ensuring the safety of those that work around him, he is cognizant of the safety of the entire work site.”

Myers & Sons Wins Award for Unique Safety Application

Myers & Sons

recognized the distraction and safety concerns that come

with constant connectivity to mobile devises that offer a constant stream of email, text messaging and internet access. This access is distracting when driving and causes traffic incidents. Across the United States, in fact, an estimated 1.6 million traffic accidents are attributed to texting/emailing while driving. In 2019, Myers implemented the TRUCE System for all of its employees. The

system eliminates notifications and the temptation to use devices while driving, increasing safety for the driver and those around them. When coupled with the in-vehicle device, the application automatically switches the cell phone to “active” mode and restricts usage of the most distracting applications. Myers’ Safety Managers and management team are able to view and interact

with the TRUCE dashboard, which allows configuration of device functions, as well as insights to monitor policy enforcement and employee utilization. As a result of the new app, the company reported it has seen a decrease in

distracted driving with personnel more readily engaged when reaching their desti- nation. AGC awarded a Construction Safety Excellence Award to Myers for this unique safety application.
