LAC: A Key Resource for AGC Members W
e are off to a busy
start in 2018. First, I would like to thank everyone that attended our State Board meeting and Officers Instal- lation banquet
held this past January in Sonoma. Te meetings were informative and well attended, and the time spent networking with business colleagues, business partners, and friends made this event well worth the time and an overall success. Ten in late February, more than
200 California AGC members repre- sented our chapter at the AGC National Convention in New Orleans, where they helped National AGC celebrate its centennial anniversary. Tis was a great event, and if you have not attended the National Convention in the past, I would urge you to get it on your calendar for next year. It offers the opportunity to see first-hand how your membership with AGC of California goes far beyond the state level and how AGC National’s work and influence in Washington D. C. is so critical to protecting and helping shape the future of our industry. As contractors, one of the main things
we do is manage the risks associated with our businesses and our projects. When we fully understand the risks and require- ments, not only are we better equipped to make good management decisions, but we can also better determine what we are willing to accept and what we are not. One of our challenges in California is keeping up with the rules and require- ments as they are always being changed. Tankfully we have two key committees, the AGC Legal Advisory Committee and AGC Legislative Committee, working on our behalf to help keep the playing field as level as possible and to help advise us on changes that come in the form of new legislation and regulations from
Sacramento. On March 8th
the AGC Legislative
Committee, chaired by Dan McGrew, met in Sacramento to review and discuss some of the many bills being introduced this year. At this meeting with our legis- lative advocates, Felipe Fuentes, Jamie Khan and our friends from AGC San Diego, we reviewed over 165 Assembly and Senate bills, discussed the impacts on our members and our industry and provided direction for our legislative advocates. As this is the legal issue of California
Constructor, I want to highlight the important role our Legal Advisory Committee members play on the Legis- lative Committee. As contractors we can read the bills and understand the obvious impacts to our members, but our attorney members act as a valuable resource helping flush out and explain impacts that may be hidden by design or just unintended consequences of proposed legislation. Our Legal Advisory Committee
(LAC) plays a key role in our association. Chaired this year by Jonathan Dunn with SMTD Law LLP, the LAC includes more than 165 of the brightest construction law attorneys across the state. Tis group is an amazing resource to AGC, and its members providing a range of services, from analyzing legislation, drafting amicus briefs on important legal cases and providing legal advice to members through the legal hotline, to preparing standard contracts and much more. On a final note, I look forward to
seeing everyone in Sacramento at our Legislative Summit and State Board meeting to be held May 14-15, 2018 at the Sacramento Convention Center. Tis will be another great opportunity to come together and discuss the many issues impacting our industry, collaborate with our elected officials and help shape the direction of our association.
