THE FUTURE OF CLINICAL TRIALS: HOW COMMUNITY PHARMACISTS ARE GETTING

s a pharmacist working in clinical trials for forty years, I have seen the range of issues the industry faces with every new drug. From that experience, I know that
the best way to resolve these problems is to involve community pharmacists. My company, RxE2, was founded for
this purpose and proposes a new paradigm that will simplify clinical trials, enhancing trial and patient outcomes. Streamlining the process using technological advances that enable independent pharmacists to participate in clinical trials makes sense, and it off ers a solution to the nagging crises that have plagued the industry for decades.
Traditional Clinical Trial Challenges T e traditional clinical trial model
struggles to recruit participants and oſt en cannot retain those patients it does attract. Ensuring medication compliance and adherence has been an ongoing challenge for clinics, especially those that don’t actively involve pharmacists. T e new Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandate to increase diversity adds another layer of diffi culty because outside of their local pharmacist, many underrepresented populations have no relationship with a healthcare provider that they trust to help them understand clinical trials. In addition to this, many have confi ning social determinants of health
(SDoH) that have not been addressed by clinics and prevent participation. T ese SDoHs include clinics being too distant from patient homes, participants’ need for childcare, or a lack of time off from work. Additionally, many candidates do not have easy access to doctors or do not have a healthcare provider (HCP) at all. T ese limitations underscore the need for a new approach.
