FROM THE BOARD Communion, P
A New Normal articipation, and Mission
frustration, if not confusion, doubt, and loss. At the same time, it has been an opportunity to examine our priorities, refocus, and reset—to look at what parts of “normal” really deserve the energy we gave them in the “before times.”
W
Often, we find ourselves yearning for things to go back to “how they are supposed to be.” What do we do with this feeling? Do we hear and heed the call of the Lenten scriptures to turn ourselves around and repent, to prepare to be reborn, to accept the mission anew? Are we ordering our time and energy in the best possible way to fulfill that mission?
NPM, like many other organizations in the past few years, has been at a transition point. As the liturgical cycle calls us each Lent to personally reexamine our mission in the world as individuals, NPM’s leadership over the past years has taken time to reexamine our organization’s mission and realign our structures, our time, and our energy to best serve that mission. Two additional seats have been added to the Board of Directors. Each region of the country is represented on the National Council by a regional representative. Forums are led by member volunteers, who lead and execute various aspects of the work of the association and serve on the National Council. Our nearly 80 diocesan chapters are now even more united to our national organization, and chapter leaders are finding new ways to serve members in their local area. It has been a long process of planning and implementation, and the new structures are only beginning to realize their potential.
hat a time we have lived through in the last couple of years! Te pandemic has been a time of stress, inconvenience, and
Structural changes may seem like unimportant technical adjustments, but only when the organizational structure aligns well with the mission can we move into our “new normal.” Just as in our personal lives, where our post-pandemic and post- Lenten normal will (hopefully) be different than what came before, NPM’s transformed new normal is awaiting us.
NPM is only going to realize its mission with the engagement of all its members. It is you that are the heart of this organization. A few staff members and volunteers can only do so much without the support, investment, and involvement of the many.
Consider how you can become more involved in this new era of NPM. Can you be a part of the work of a forum? Tere are nine forums, each providing leadership in a given area of operations or ministry. Would you consider running for a regional representative seat? Or, perhaps even more importantly, could you be more involved in your local chapter, as a host, a planner, a presenter, or an attendee?
As we work together to build an NPM that welcomes all pastoral musicians and truly sings the praise of God through divinely inspired musical worship, to what part of that work are you being called?
