who led their followers to God. Verse two speaks of Mary’s answer to God’s call and her path that took her to the foot of the cross. Each is followed by a comparison to our answering God’s call. Although it may lead us to trials, “love comes to us and takes the lead.” Te children’s part mostly follows the soprano part. Te verse about Mary is a cappella. Tere are sprightly right-hand interludes based on SIMPLE GIFTS. (5:00)
Te Light of Peace. Befiehl du deine Wege, Paul Gerhardt, 1607-1676, tr. R. S-W., Russell Schulz-Widmar. SATB and/or unison, piano or organ. Concordia 984369, $2.40.
Several of Paul Gerhardt’s hymn texts were used by J.S. Bach in his cantatas, motets, Passions, and Christmas Oratorio. Russell
Schulz-Widmar has created a piece that is flexible
both in the way the music changes throughout (with frequent meter changes) and in how it gives you several performance options. Te four-part choral writing is in place, as expected, but there is also a separate unison line below. And it’s not just the soprano line reproduced, but rather a distinct melody based on HERZLICH TUT MICH VERLANGEN by Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612), often with notes not found in the other four parts. But they pair perfectly and so may be sung alone in place of the SATB choir part or along with it by a soloist, hence the “and/or” description. Schulz- Widmar’s English translation is an appeal to “entrust whatever grieves you into God’s loving hands.” A repeat for verse two will facilitate learning. Te words, vocal parts, and flowing eighth notes in the accompaniment will soothe the listener during times of sorrow. (4:00)
