thought to have gone extinct, but was rediscovered in 2012 in a home garden. Since then, additional sightings have occurred, and Shevaun hopes that by featuring it on the stamps, more people will be on the lookout. Since Ireland is quite famous for the heather that grows on the moors, the Colletes succinctus). These bell- upside while feeding. Released in 2018, the stamps were such feature some of Ireland’s other invertebrates. An accomplished artist, Shevaun has taught botanical illustration to all levels of artists, from professionals to beginners. The courses have taken place at universities, conferences, and online. Her close friend and avid bee lover, Vicky Rellas, organized a series of bee painting workshops for adults and children in the United States. Shevaun loves the enthusiasm her younger artists bring to the class, affectionately referring to them as her “Little Bee Warriors.” The children study the bee samples with such acuity and then put their artistic impressions on paper. In addition to learning about perspective and color combinations, they learn how small changes in the environment can let pollinators thrive. As a member of the Society of Botanical Artists, the Irish Society of Botanical Artists, and the American Society of Botanical Artists, Shevaun has delved into the species difference of bees around the globe. She admits this can be intimidating when you consider that there are 98 different bees in Ireland and over 4,000 bees in North America. Currently, Shevaun is working on a Sacred Bee series, which will start with the endangered rusty patched bumble bee from North America. Not all botanical artists approve of the addition of pollinators into the work. Many feel the plants should stand on their own, but Shevaun enjoys featuring the interrelationship explore these ecosystem interactions. “Sometimes you really have to look at things to appreciate them.”
