On Sunday Morning, when Sherwood went to his Sunday school classroom, he saw that his teacher had put up on the bulletin board a poster about the 10 commandments. After the class had started, Sherwood raised his hand and told the teach- er he had a question about the bulletin board, “Aren’t those from the Old Testament?” She replied, “Yes they are.” Sherwood said, “I don’t understand why they are still impor-
tant for Christians.” that the 10 commandments were very important to the children of Israel because they were God’s commands to His people about how they were to live. When Moses went up to the mountain to meet with God, he brought back the commandments on a tablet of stone so that they could see how important it was for them to obey the commandments in order to remain God’s people.” “Now. They are still important for Christians. We know that God is the same yesterday and today and forever. He doesn’t change His mind about how His people ought to live so in the 10
commandments we can see what is still important for God’s people to know about how God wants us to live.” Another member of Sherwood’s Sunday school class raised his hand. He remembered something the teacher had taught them about celebrat-
ing Easter and the resurrection of Jesus. He said, “Teacher, you taught us that just obeying rules and laws is not what saves us to live in heaven when we die. Only our faith in Jesus Christ can do that.” “That’s right” the teacher replied, “We need to remember that obeying the 10 commandments is not a requirement for us to be saved. They are
like windows into the mind of God, pictures of how God has always expected His people to live. They are 10 of the many guides in the Bible that help us to live in the way God wants us to live. When we obey them we show our respect and love for God.
