Professor of New Testament Dr. Loyd Melton retires
Erskine Theological Seminary has announced the retirement of John Montgom- ery Bell Professor of New Testament Dr. Loyd D. Melton, a longtime faculty mem- ber who has been named Distinguished Professor of New Testament Emeritus. A seminary statement released in February expresses gratitude for Melton’s work and dedication. “The seminary honors Dr. Melton in the Lord for his part- nership in the gospel, his extraordinary teaching ability, his excellence in leading the Doctor of Ministry program, and his pastoral commitment to the Church and to our students.” Melton served from 1983 to 2024 as a professor at Erskine Theological Semi-
nary. From 1998 until his retirement, he also served as director of the Doctor of Ministry program.
He is known for his careful scholarship, especially his work on the biblical
classes drew the largest enrollment in the seminary. “The Lord gave Dr. Melton an incredible ability to bring together the academic study of the New Testament with robust practical application based on his more than 50 years of pastoral ministry experience,” says Dean of the Seminary Dr. Seth Nelson.
“For years, his course on Romans was one of our students’ favorite courses. Students frequently remarked that Dr. Melton introduced them to Romans as both a theological masterpiece and a pastoral letter.” Describing Melton’s focus in the classroom, Nelson says, “He taught about the
centrality of the theme of the Kingdom sharing numerous personal stories of pastoral ministry ‘in the trenches’ to il- lustrate life in the Kingdom.” Noting Melton’s reputation among his colleagues, the dean says he is “loved and known for his gentle, col- legial, and gracious spirit and his abil- ity to work with diverse perspectives Jesus Christ.” Professor of Systematic Theology and Dean of the Seminary Emeritus Melton’s colleague.
