Reasons to Celebrate
MARTHA MCKENZIE WM President
t amazes me that there are wom- en in our denomination who have never heard of our Jubilee Birthday Ladies. Well, guess what – it’s not their fault. It’s our fault! Sometimes sketchy information is passed down. There are times when we think you already know. Pos- sibly, you kind of have an idea, but don’t know exactly how to get start- ed. Next year (2025) will be the 100th year of celebrating Jubilee Birthday Ladies. How will you celebrate? Start with prayer and information; add cake and possibly a fun activity. Don’t forget the offering.
I In my next article, I would like
to share how you celebrate in your churches, so we may get ideas from one another. Jot your party ideas down, and email them to mmmck-
enzie@aol.com. Be sure and identify your church. Wouldn’t it be wonder- ful if every church has a Jubilee Birth- day Party to celebrate our hundredth year? We can do it – you can do it! Now, here is how the Jubilee birth-
missionary was a woman, Miss Mary
Rebekah Carson Knowing, loving, serving, Jesus ARPWM March/April 2024 19
served in Egypt from 1875 until her death in 1881. Although the ARP women supported missions since 1818, these were throughout our denomination for foreign missions. How did the Jubilee Birth- day celebrations come about, then? At the 1925 Synodical Union meeting, Mrs. A. G. Brice proposed the recognition of 50 years – the year of the jubilee – and the establishment of the Jubilee Birthday Ladies as their focus. The purpose of having an annual celebration is to raise awareness of missions in general but - day Ladies. Past and present, these Jubilee Birthday Ladies uniquely represent the ARPWM - us - in taking the Gospel Message and love of Christ to the world. One last hint, in preparation for your celebration - ask your pastor to an- nounce your upcoming party, and have it announced in the bulletin, too. Do this at least two weeks in advance. Remind your members to bring their offer- ings, and make sure there is plenty of yummy cake! Have a program to inform everyone of what these ladies do, and who they are, as Jubilee Birthday Ladies. Much of the information I have used, and you may use to obtain facts to im- part, came from a wonderful pamphlet by Mary Alice Mitchell, entitled “His- tory of the Jubilee Birthday Celebration,” and The Centennial History of the ARP Church, 1803–1903. There also is a wealth of information on this website:
