Independence Day!
By Dr. John Cook W
e, Americans, usually refer to the upcoming national holiday as, “The Fourth of
- dence Day.” This is the day that we remember the signing of the Declara- tion of Independence on the 4th of
In our day, “independence” has come to mean, “I can do whatever I - dependence Day,” you should take some time and read the Declaration and remember what many of the rea- sons were for our nation breaking away from its mother country. Most of them had to do with what we call “justice” issues. That is, what is right and just by the “Laws of Nature and nature’s God.” It was never, therefore, the intent of our independence to live free of Law but rather to be free to live by the Laws of God as they are re- vealed in His Word and in conscience. While most of us know that Thomas - dependence, many have forgotten that - tributors of the Constitution. Adams would later write about the Consti- tution, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the govern- ment of any other.”
This Independence Day, let us re- commit ourselves to the principles of justice, equality, morality, and the “laws of nature and nature’s God.” Furthermore, let us heed Paul’s words in 2 Timothy 2:1-4,
“First of all, then, I urge suppli- cations, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high po- sitions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. This is good and it is ac- ceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”
