Sherwood came back downstairs to talk to his par- ents about praying. He explained that a friend of his told him that he didn’t kneel beside his bed to say his prayers each night. Sherwood was worried that the prayers of his friend weren’t being heard because he wasn’t kneeling at his bedside. Dad sat Sherwood down and told him that the Bible doesn’t tell us exactly how we must pray in order for God to hear us. He said that it isn’t important whether you are sitting, stand- ing, kneeling, or even bowing, God hears our prayers we make in Jesus’ name and answers them. What we do need to remember, dad said, is that the Bible tells us we should pray without ceasing.
Sherwood said, “Dad if I did that I’d never have any time enough to do anything else.” Dad smiled and went on to ex- plain that to him that meant not to ever forget to pray. That made sense to Sherwood!
Mom said that to her prayer was more like simply talking to God. Telling Him thanks, asking for what you would like to happen, and praising His name because God does hear our prayers. Prayer, she said is like a tool God gives to us. Just like a saw cuts wood, our prayers help to accomplish what God wants in our lives and in the world. Dad added that we always need to remember that Scripture says, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and
effective.” He reminded Sherwood that the preacher said last Sunday that he said a prayer whenever he heard a siren his eyes to pray. Mom added, “You don’t need to check behind God to see what happens, you need to do what you can do and that means to pray about everything. You pray for those you know, for those you will never meet, and for the whole world.”
