According to Jim Klauzer, the distribution system is the most overlooked drip component.

wise

A complete drip irrigation system is usually broken down into four major categories: pressurization source, normally a pump; filtration station, commonly a media filter; distribution system; and drip tape.

I am continually amazed that although growers understand the need for a pump, know that water filtration is required and comprehend the principles of drip tape, the component that is largely forgotten is the need for the distribution system.

The distribution system involves the design and layout of PVC pipe or layflat pipe with zone valves included for pressure regulation. This component constitutes a fairly large portion of the initial bid on a new system and always catches growers off guard. They are routinely stunned by the cost of all the pipe, tees, elbows and especially pressure-regulating valves. These

dynamic regulating valves are so necessary for accurate and consistent field watering uniformity.

Soon after the first or second irrigation, growers clearly see that the pressure-regulating valves hold the key to a successful, uniformly irrigated crop. It also becomes clear that pipe sizing is about water volume, pipe diameter and pressures, as they relate to friction losses. It doesn’t take long to appreciate the value of having a field designed by an IA-certified designer. This assurance of quality continues into a superior crop, as expressed in higher yields, better quality and increased storability.
