Check your taxonomy code to ensure you’re not denied reimbursement. Eff ective Dec. 1, 2023, Aetna no longer allows additional payment for evaluation and management (E/M) when billed by a “radiologist.” If your designated taxonomy is “radiologist,” this policy will aff ect you. Aetna’s policy lists 16 taxonomy codes in radiology that they will not allow E/M payments from. A taxonomy code is a unique 10-character code that designates your classifi cation and specialization. You use this code when applying for a National Provider Identifi er (NPI). Many insurers require the use of taxonomy codes to issue billing credentials, process health insurance claims and determine network adequacy.
SIR highly recommends reviewing your taxonomy and ensuring you are designated as an interventional radiologist (vascular and interventional radiology) under taxonomy code 2085R0204X to ensure you are not aff ected by Aetna’s policy or future insurers’ policies.
Here’s what you need to do:
• Go to
npiregistry.cms.hhs.gov and look up your NPI.
• Click on the NPI number to view the full record, including the provider taxonomy codes. If the taxonomy codes are accurate, you’re all set.
• If the codes are incorrect, sign into
nppes.cms.hhs.gov/ NPPES/
Welcome.do to manage and update your NPI and taxonomy code.
Speak to your billing team to ensure your taxonomy code is updated in their system and refl ects the correct taxonomy on your claims.
