Birth of SIR toolkits The concept of a “toolkit” is hardly new. A growing number of health care and other organizations have developed such resource repositories in recent years. For example, the American College of Radiology (ACR) developed a toolkit on its Imaging 3.0 initiative (bit.ly/1YlkHXQ) that provides the medical community with a range of resources on the next generation of imaging modalities, economics and more.

“A toolkit provides a valuable repository for busy IRs in which they can quickly find what they need,” explains Joseph R. Steele, MD, FSIR, one of the developers of the initial concept.

The SIR toolkits will aggregate a wide range of disparate resources linked by a common topic, curated by topic experts. In these toolkits, SIR members will be able to quickly find the information and resources that would otherwise require extensive and arduous manual searching.

SIR launched its first toolkit, the Quality Toolkit, in fall 2015. Housed on sirweb.org, the toolkit provides a

scrupulously organized collection of resources around quality.

• Section 1, “What do I need to know?,” describes how to use the toolkit and explains the relevance of quality to today’s medical practitioner.

• Section 2, “What can I do now?,” provides helpful links and resources on indentifying and developing evidence- based performance measures.

• Section 3, “How can I help lead?,” outlines ways in which IRs can get involved with SIR quality initiatives.

According to Dr. Steele, “The Quality Toolkit provides resources that should help all SIR members improve quality, develop improvement plans, and fulfill internal and external reporting requirements.”

Although the Quality Toolkit has launched, it will continue to be revised and updated as new SIR and other resources related to quality become available.

Future of SIR toolkits As valuable as the Quality Toolkit is anticipated to be to the IR community, it represents the starting point of SIR’s

toolkit effort. As volunteers worked on the Quality Toolkit, the value of such an approach became clear and plans for other toolkits quickly formed. Other toolkits that the society expects to launch in the coming year include:

• Coding and Payment • Advocacy • Practice Building

The design, structure and location of the toolkits will likely change with the launch of the new SIR website, which may provide news ways to share and comment on content, increased multimedia assets and more. Whatever shape these toolkits take, though, the goal will remain to provide members with simplified access to the resources they need.

If you know of resources that should be added to the SIR Quality Toolkit, have suggestions for the development of other toolkits or would like to volunteer to assist with their development, please contact the society at bhaefs@sirweb.org.
