is a significant effort and we hope you will all participate.

Research consensus panels and research summits To focus our resources on the highest priority research, the foundation annually identifies the top research issues in IR and pulls together interdisciplinary world experts on the topic to help identify the gaps that need to be filled and the next steps on the most relevant research that needs to be done. Industry and government representatives are invited to attend and participate as we lay out the path to move the areas of highest need forward. We typically hold three or four of these meetings annually. The results are submitted to the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology and the foundation offers a funding mechanism to help any of the panelists develop a subsequent proposal or protocol for significant external funding.

Grants For many years, a core function of the foundation has been encouraging research through a full continuum of grant opportunities. This method, which helps develop young investigators, is a vehicle to develop early data for a topic that will hopefully lead to a larger study. SIR Foundation has a rigorous strict funding line and doesn’t fund projects that fall below the level of quality we want to promote. But each applicant receives either funding or mentorship. If an application falls below the funding line, we have mentors and resources in place to help that applicant improve the proposal if they choose. Erik N.K. Cressman, MD, PhD, FSIR (past Research Grants and Education chair), Clifford R. Weiss, MD, FSIR (current Research Grants and Education chair), and David Woodrum, MD, FSIR (Grant Review Committee chair), are all committed to improving the quality of the proposals, increasing the knowledge and skills of the researchers. and producing higher quality IR research.

Support for researchers Doing research requires significant infrastructure and support. SIR Foundation is currently mentoring members on various projects and directly supporting research through our RCPs, research summits and grant programs. As we continue to grow, we will focus on bringing in additional resources that will help or members with data analysis and grant writing. We are planning collaborations with other entities to further our efforts in supporting researchers.

Development The foundation exists to support you. We are so grateful for your continued contributions, as the foundation does not receive any funding from your SIR dues. We’re excited to be expanding IR research capabilities and expertise every year, but the only way we can continue to grow and succeed in bringing these opportunities and advancements to IR is if each of you contributes directly to SIR Foundation with an annual gift.

I hope you’ll join me in becoming a member of the Pioneer Circle with an annual gift of $1,000 or more. Your tax deductible gift will be used to expand these essential research functions that are already raising the visibility of IR in research circles, opening doors to additional funding opportunities, increasing meaningful collaborations, making critical advancements in research in IR, and helping to define the value of IR. And, most importantly, I want to thank those of you who already contribute. Without your support, IR research would not be making these huge leaps forward.

When you understand how critical the activities of the foundation are to your practice and your patients, I hope you will join me in making ongoing support of SIR Foundation part of your professional life.
