chair's column By Katharine L. Krol, MD, FSIR The impact of SIR Foundation I

n my first few months as chair of SIR Foundation, I’ve made a commitment to increase awareness around the impact that

the foundation is having on IR. It’s unfortunate that many people don’t understand the foundation, and others view the foundation as just a grant- making organization, with no insight about how it directly impacts them and their practice.

This misperception tells me we need to widely share the impact SIR Foundation has made and continues to make on IR, and I look forward to raising awareness and excitement about the foundation’s mission, activities and accomplishments. As you look for ways to contribute to IR, please consider the foundation as an important vehicle for you to get involved and to be part of the process. Find out what we are doing, how you can help, and how contributing your time and/or financial support to SIR Foundation can help advance your

own goals. Some of the projects listed below may spark your interest!

Your SIR Foundation has been making many needed changes over the past few years, several now coming to fruition. We are excited to share these with you as what we are doing is most impactful for you, your patients and your practice.

COVID-19 research To support our members as they sought funding for their COVID-19 research proposals, the foundation rapidly developed a request for proposals (RFP) for COVID-19 research with a fast turnaround. We had a robust response and are currently reviewing six proposals for potential funding from the foundation. The proposals required involvement of an IR therapy and collaboration with at least one other specialty in addition to IR. This research can help support the incredible value you bring to your

patients, your practice and your healthcare system, as IR is a critical part of the fight against this disease.

IO data registry To address a need for research in interventional oncology, SIR Foundation has created the Interventional Oncology Clinical Outcomes Registry (IO-CORE) Foundation in collaboration with the Society of Interventional Oncology (SIO). This crucial tool will provide the data we need to further support IO therapies, beginning with MSK interventions, and will soon include lung and liver components. We are currently receiving proposals from CROs to help launch this important endeavor.

Review of research proposals We recently developed a process that brings together clinical research experts to review incoming proposals and provide constructive feedback to help the researchers succeed in executing and funding their projects. Sarah White, MD, FSIR, SIR Foundation Clinical Research and Registries Division chair, helps to unite each potential investigator with the resources they need to help see their project through to fruition.

Clinical trials network To remedy a frequent stumbling block in clinical trial success, the foundation is working to identify the most productive and experienced clinical research sites that can fulfill the enrollment expectations of various clinical trials. We are developing a database that will be accessible to all SIR members and will give potential researchers the information they need to identify the best sites for their specific needs. This
