June is National Safety Month Remember these statistics to encourage your teams to practice safe habits—not only during National Safety Month, but every day.

There were a total of 5,147 FATAL WORK INJURIES recorded in the U.S. in 2017, down slightly from the 5,190 fatal injuries reported in 2016, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

Grounds maintenance workers (including first-line supervisors) incurred 244 FATALITIES IN 2017. This was a small decrease from the 2016 figure (247) but was still the second-highest total since 2003. A total of 36 deaths were due to falls from trees, and another 35 were due to being struck by a falling tree or branch.

Did you know compared to the rates among all workers, grounds maintenance workers are four times more likely to experience fatal work-related injuries and two times more likely to experience nonfatal work-related injuries? ON AVERAGE, 100 WORKERS DIE ON THE JOB EACH WEEK (2016). Many of these workers are contingent, part-time, contract or temporary. Often, they don't receive adequate training and safety instructions prior to beginning work. TLP
