The Volunteer of the Year is a member who consistently goes above and beyond what’s expected. Karen Rains chaired a committee that doesn’t slow down—the Communications Committee— the Committee that coordinates the Community Associations Journal. The Committee meets on a monthly basis but in 2013 my communication with Karen was on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. Karen was asked to Chair the Communications Committee a few years ago. She stepped up to the plate and soon realized that the magazine was going from a bi-monthly magazine (6 issues a year) to a monthly magazine (12 issues a year)—quite a large undertaking.

When given a challenge, Karen steps up with a smile and a “let’s get it done” attitude. She has fantastic organizational skills and is respected and admired by her fellow committee members. Additionally, in 2013, she studied for and earned her PCAM!

I am fortunate to know and work with the 2013 Volunteer of the Year. Thank you, Karen Rains, it’s truly a pleasure to work with you!
