Thirty-five years ago, Washington’s chiropractic profession looked very different than it does today. We were not one community, but three—separate organizations, each convinced it held the right vision for chiropractic, each competing

for the same members, the same legislative attention, and the same seat at the table. For years, we spent as much energy working against each other as we did advancing the profession.

That changed because a group of forward-thinking doctors decided our differences mattered less than our shared purpose. They understood that a divided profession is an ineffective one—that lawmakers, insurers, and educators listen to unified voices, not fractured ones. So they did something difficult: they set aside old rivalries and merged three organizations into one. On that day, the Washington State Chiropractic Association was born, and Washington’s chiropractors gained something they had never truly had before—a single, unified voice in policy, education, insurance, and business advocacy.

I think about those founders often, especially this year as we mark our 35th anniversary. Some are still around, but others I never had the pleasure of meeting. Their legends have stood the test of time though, and so has the unified vision they constructed together. The decision wasn’t easy or inevitable. It would have been simpler to stay separate, to keep nursing old grievances, to let philosophical differences calcify into permanent division. Instead, they chose unity, and every DC practicing in this state today benefits from that choice—whether they realize it or not.

Because of that unification, the WSCA has been able to negotiate with insurers from a position of strength, shape chiropractic education standards, build resources that help doctors run sustainable, thriving practices, and fight to protect the scope of practice while also advocating for a reasonable, measured evolution that mirrors the profession’s actual growth over that time. None of that would have been possible if we were still three organizations pulling in three directions.

As we celebrate this milestone, I want to honor the founders who had the wisdom and humility to put the profession ahead of old allegiances. Their legacy isn’t just an organization—it’s a mindset. Unity doesn’t mean uniformity. We don’t all have to agree on everything to move forward together. What we owe each other, and the founders who made this association possible, is a continued commitment to that same principle: one profession, one voice, moving forward together, helping chiropractors help patients.

Thank you for being part of this community. Here’s to the next 35 years. 6 www .ch ir oh ealth.or g
