It was good to see everyone at the Capitol this year. It was a little disappointing to see lower numbers than usual. Our bill just didn’t light a fire under most DCs. Let’s face it, most of us aren’t adjusting animals.
Why should we attend when it isn’t in our personal interests? We attend to present a united front for our brothers and sisters with different interests and practice styles. Today we push the line for them and tomorrow they will help push the line for us.
It isn’t just our fellow chiropractors who benefit from our lobbying. Our legislators also need what we have to offer.
We have part time legislators. They are moms and dads who have day jobs. They don’t have all the answers, but they have all the votes and responsibility.
Olympia needs people to explain the effects of complex issues. We are well suited for this because we explain complicated things in easy to understand ways everyday.
As subject matter experts, we can help find real solutions to complicated questions. We can make sure that our legislators understand and can make informed decisions about the laws that affect us.
Legislating and lobbying are a lot like chiropractic care. Everyone thinks it is an event but it is a process. Consistency over time is the key. You have to put in the miles.
When we make and attend legislative appointments, when we attend fundraisers and support local candidates, when we do something as simple as putting campaign signs in our yards, we put in the miles.
We have battles ahead and we need legislators who know who we are and count on our knowledge. We need to show up and push the line.
Participating is easy, read the article on page 10 in this issue. Please plan to join us next year.
