Name: Martin Henschell, DC
Clinic name and location: Henschell Chiropractic PS, Bonney Lake, WA
What chiropractic school did you graduate from? I graduated from Life West Chiropractic College in 1998.
What made you want to be a chiropractor?
When I was seven years old, I visited my grandmother. It was winter in Canada. I was a little guy and was given a large adult scarf which I carelessly wrapped around my neck. I got in the back seat of grandma’s car and didn’t notice the long scarf went out the door and wrapped around the back tire. As grandma took off, the woolen scarf tightened, ripping my throat and causing my head to hit the window. This lead to my first chiropractic visit. I have always played sports. Over the years I have had injuries that required chiropractic care. When I went to college, I continued to play and coach. I planned to be a PE teacher. I love people and love helping people so teaching made sense. But I have a good friend who went through chiropractic school. He told me I should consider it. “Just do it,” he said. So, I did and I’ve never looked back.
My mission is to make a difference in our patients’ lives by applying the healing principles of Chiropractic, Philosophy and Wellness.
How has being a member of the WSCA helped you? I have been a member of WSCA from the beginning of my career in Washington state. I have participated in events and education. And I was honored to serve as a Board member. I love the fact that we all can help make positive changes in our profession. WSCA helps us stay informed about legislation and changes that directly affect us as practitioners. The monthly Plexus magazine reminds us of exciting upcoming events, and annual conventions so we can keep updated with new trends. Also having CEs is a benefit. The world keeps changing and WSCA has been on the pulse, to help guide us. I highly recommended joining WSCA new and experienced doctors.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned in your career? Life West’s motto is “To Give. To Love. To Serve.” I try to follow that and have good “Intent.” Most of all – “Work Smarter, Not Harder.”
What one piece of advice would you give to new DCs? Find a subluxation based doctor to mentor you and learn everything you can about the business side of running your practice. Chiropractic schools don’t teach the business side. Get involved in your local community and the chiropractic community through WSCA. Work hard, keep focused. Love what you do.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.
I used to work as a Fire Ranger in Canada, I was a Radio Dj broadcaster for a country radio station in North Dakota, and I drove the Zamboni in Redwood City while going to Life West.
