EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Jeff Curwen, CAE WSCA Executive Director

As you’ve probably heard about the fate of this year’s signature piece of legislations—E2SHB 1589, the fairness in contracting bill—I think now is a good time to discuss

something that is increasingly critical to the success of your profession: political engagement. I know it’s something we repeat every year and it seems that year after year chiropractic engagement in politics grows; but it’s such an important topic that always bears repeating. In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, the role that policymakers play in shaping the environment in which you operate cannot be overstated. Your voice, as a chiropractor and a member of the Washington State Chiropractic Association, is more powerful than ever, and it is essential that we as a community are politically active.

The decisions made in Olympia directly affect how you practice, the reimbursement rates you receive, and the public’s access to the care you provide. Your continued ability to thrive depends on your ability to influence those decisions.

Over the years, the WSCA has worked tirelessly to advocate on behalf of our members, but we cannot succeed without your active participation. It is not enough to simply belong to the association. We need your voice in the halls of government, at town hall meetings, and on the frontlines of campaigns that support chiropractic care and fairness in the business practices of health insurance. Legislators and regulators need to hear from you, firsthand, about how this profession improves the health and well-being of our communities. But they also need to hear firsthand how unfairly insurers treat those who are only interested in making patients healthier. Insurance companies have armies of lobbyists whispering into the ears of lawmakers every day—so why would we as a profession or an association not do everything in our power to counter those messages?

When we speak with one voice, we are far more likely to bring about change. From opposing harmful policies to promoting initiatives that expand access to chiropractic care, your involvement is critical. Whether it’s contacting your legislators, attending advocacy events, participating in campaigns, or even just staying informed about the issues, every action you take has an impact. You did an amazing job this year of making phone calls and sending emails at the critical points where we asked you to; but there really needs to be more consistent, organic communication if we want to see real results.

I understand that political engagement can feel overwhelming, and that it takes a lot of time that you can barely fit into your schedule. But I assure you that you do not have to navigate this alone. The WSCA provides numerous resources to help guide you through the process. We offer training, support, and clear action steps to make your involvement as seamless and effective as possible. Remember, it’s not just about what we’re doing today; it’s about setting the stage for the future of chiropractic care in our state.

Together, we can make a significant difference. Your voice matters.
