and more often, a condo or townhome is a person’s or couple’s first home because it’s simply more affordable. It is a good way to obtain the financial benefits of home ownership if you’re not quite able to afford a single family home yet.

Pro:

basement and even a 2-car garage, most condos do not. More often than not, the garage is detached and only a single car-sized and there is no basement, though sometimes there is a community basement with individual storage lockers. Still… less space. You are definitely less likely to be able to keep your beloved childhood comic collection AND still find places to put all of your child’s toys (I speak from personal experience on this one). Bottom line, you definitely have to downsize your living habits when you move into a condo or townhome.

Con:

Also, less peace and quiet. Living in a condominium or townhome environment means you are usually sharing at least a wall with your neighbors in a townhome, and likely a ceiling or a floor as well in a condominium situation. You may end up hearing pets, music, remodeling noises, disagreements, and other sound effects that emanate from your neighbors’ homes, and likewise, they may hear the same coming from your living space.

So, there you have it. Suffice it to say that, when one chooses to buy into and live in a condo or townhome association, they must sacrifice some small freedoms and forfeit some control over their property to others. Whether or not a condo or townhome is the right place for you, at this or any other point in your life, would depend on whether or not said sacrifices are worth said conveniences.
