FODDER FOR THOUGHT
Researchers explore reasons behind pickup truck’s popularity
I was driving past my old high school the other day and noticed all the pickups in the student parking lot. That got me to think- ing: When did pickups become “cool”? When I was in high school (Class of ’73), no one drove a truck. Of course, most of us rode the bus to school, but even on weekends we wouldn’t be caught driving Dad’s pickup.
I did have one classmate who occa- sionally drove the farm truck to school. That was not cool. I guess at that time, most trucks were beat up, dirty farm trucks.
Somewhere over the last few decades,
the pickup truck’s image changed. Maybe it was a cultural shift. Maybe it was truck man- ufacturers advertising.
Being the longtime journalist that I am, I thought this topic deserved some research. And surprisingly, experts have actually looked into this phenomenon.
Pickup trucks — are they really a reflection of masculinity and self-reliance?
Here are some of the reasons they came up with for the pickup’s popularity: • Tough and powerful image: Pickup trucks are often marketed to evoke masculin- ity, self-reliance and the ability to handle challenging situations.
• Cultural symbolism: In certain re- gions, particularly rural areas, trucks are deeply connected to a lifestyle of hard work,

self-reliance and being outdoors. • Pickup trucks offer a high degree of personalization, allowing owners to custom- ize their vehicles to fit their specific needs and lifestyles. From bed liners and toolboxes to lift kits and off-road tires, the options are nearly limitless. • This ability to tailor a truck to one’s unique preferences enhances owners’ per- sonal connection with their vehicles. For many, a pickup is more than just a mode of transportation; it’s an extension of their iden- tity and lifestyle.
I guess that sort of explains why the teenage boys — and some girls — in my rural part of the country prefer pickups. As for us older drivers, we appreciate the bells and whistles now available, like Bluetooth, satellite radio and luxury seating. And yes, we like that masculinity and self- reliance stuff too! n
