JJust a few updates this Summer from the legislat that ended in Spring i
MD HB 379/SB 547 - A bill to prohibit bears, cougars, elephants, jaguars, leopards, lions, nonhuman primates, tigers, or any passed after years of reintroduction. It was signed into law by before they took their elephants off the road, there were not one takes their exotics up to Maryland to perform anymore since Ringling closed. In fact, reopening without animals helped the bill pass. ZAA wrote a letter in opposition and legislators insisted that no zoos would be affected by this bill. This makes Maryland the 10th state to restrict the use of wild animals in circuses, fairs and arena performances.
MS HB 1357 - Revises the powers and duties of the Agriculture
was signed into law by Governor Reeves in May. If you recall from
that allowing the state to be involved in funds would discourage donations from the private sector. The Senate Appropriations streamline funds by having them pass through the legislation as a system of checks and balances, something every state agency must do.
