BAROOK was a retired Military Work Dog (MWD) trained in patrol, tracking, and explosive detection. He served in the 75th Ranger Battalion with two combat tours in Afghanistan (2010-2012). Medically retired because of Lyme disease, he came to the McBracken County Sheriff’s office from Elite k-9, serving five years on the SWAT team. Barook was a staple in the community and performed his job well. He is missed by his owner and partner Chief Deputy Mike Turnbow and his fellow officers. Barook passed from complications of a GDU. Submitted by Ceglinski Animal Clinic, Dr. Rennie Church.
NALA serves the community as a volunteer search and rescue dog for the Washing- ton County Rescue Department. Nala became a certified S & R dog in April, 2019 and is also an emotional support therapy dog. She has gone on five rescue calls suc- cessfully recovering four children. Handler PJ Hale says their most memorable call was when a 3-year-old child was lost in a corn field. Nala found the girl and trotted out of the field with the child riding her like a horse! Nala also serves as a blood donor with the Jefferson Animal Hospital blood bank. She has given life-saving blood nine times. Certainly Nala exemplifies the affection, loyalty, and security of the human-animal and animal-animal bond. Submitted by Jefferson Animal Hospital, Dr. Summer Dorn
